These are the 6 types of mean men you should avoid at work

These are the 6 types of mean men you should avoid at workThese are the 6 types of mean men you should avoid at workThe rise of the mean man is an emerging problem in ur country and our workplaces.Mean men are people with entrepreneurial characteristics that have been taken too far. Some characteristics of entrepreneurs include a need for achievement, drive, being action-orientation, a need for autonomy, a desire for high levels of control, high impulsivity, suspicion of others, a predisposition to take risks, high self-confidence, and a high need for approval. When some of these traits are dialed up, we start seeing sides of people that can be dark and worrying - especially when that person is your boss or coworker. Here are six types of mean men1. The Two-FaceThe two-faced mean man is someone who has one side that is caring, empathetic, and patient. Then theres another side that can be problematic when it rears its head. An example of this type is Jerry Sandusky, the former Penn Sta te defensive coordinator who was charged with sexual abuse.2. The OpportunistPeople in this category expect recognition and privilege just because of who they are. They are unscrupulous, amoral, and comfortable deceiving others to get who they want. The poster boy for this type is Lance Armstrong, the former cyclist who was banned from professional competitions after he admitted to using performance-enhancing drugs.3. The HotheadHotheads are famous for their adult tantrums. They attack other people, go into fits of rages, and show hostility. Harvey Weinstein, the film producer who produced Pulp Fiction, among others, is known for being quick to anger.4. The CowboyWhen someone pushes the propensity to take risks, you get the cowboy. These are risk junkies who often end up looking stupid rather than courageous for the risks they take. For example, former Uber CEO Travis Kalanick took outsized risks to build the organization, some of which have backfired.5. The DogmatistThis type is en dlessly argumentative. They take great delight in contradicting you. Theyre less concerned with the logic of their reason and mora concerned with frustrating or undermining the other person for control. Steve Jobs was an example of this type.6. Mr. DissatisfactionThis type feels like life hasnt given him his due. He feels deprived, and at his core, he remains insecure about his power. An example isDov Charney, founder and former CEO of the now-defunct American Apparel. How should you react to these people?1) What is happening right now? Take a second to detach and bring rationality into our emotional state.2) What are the facts? Assess your personal needs and summarize what is it about the way you were treated that bothered you and what you want to accomplish?3) What is he doing? Think about what specifically the person is doing to push your buttons. What is he doing that is triggering a negative reaction?4) What amIdoing? Dont blame yourself as the victim, but it can help to think a bout how youre responding and whether changing your reactions would help.5) What are my options here? Its important to create boundaries between you and people who can make you feel horrible or doubt yourself. In general, its better to not engage. If they call, let it go to voice mail. If they send you an email, dont respond rightaway. If they are parading around the workplace looking for someone who they can take their frustrations out on, go to the rest room or just hide for a few minutes until they leave. By taking subtle - and not so subtle - steps back, youre signaling to them that youre not a target for their games.Mark Lipton is a professor of management at The New School and author ofMean Men The Perversion of Americas Self-Made Man.As told to Kirsten Salyer.

The Dows Great Descent How Bankers Are Cutting BackThe Dows Great Descent How Bankers Are Cutting BackThe Dow took a big hit today during the last two hours of trading, falling nearly 700 points or about 7 percent tofinish below the 8,600 mark. This, of course, is not a good sign, especially since the sharp decline came on the same day as a slew of government announcements here and abroad (such as Hank Paulsons plan to buy stakes in banks) that were supposed to improve investor confidence, not hammer it away.Yet again, several big banksstock pricestook dives today, particularly Morgan Stanley, whose shares fell drastically on rumors that Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group may not pony up $9 billion to invest in the bank after all (as it did yesterday, Morgan denied the rumors, sayingthe deal is on track, which investors apparently werent buying). Women We want you!

Women We want you Women We want youPosted September 3, 2012, by Vivien LuuThe gender divide started early. As babies we were either bundled in blue blankets or pink. As kids, the girls had tea parties, while the boys played cowboys and Indians. And as adults, the men became engineers and tradies, while the women became high school teachers and nurses. These are of course blanket generalisations, but there is a grain of truth here. The reality is, there are some industries that are, and always have been, dominated by men. As the world becomes more attuned to this great gender divide and realises just how important female professionals are to economic growth (one government report estimates that eliminating the gender wage gap altogether could give the Australian economy a $93 billion boost), we women also need to step up and stop selling ourselves short or limiting our options. Here are a few career paths you might not have considered but could be perfect for, that just might need y ouICTAccording to the most recent statistics released by the Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations, women make up as little as 18 per cent of the ICT industry meaning that less than one in five people working in IT are females. The numbers drop even more significantly when we look at women in executive and management roles in the industry. Host Support Specialist, Janine Jardine, who has worked in IT for 20 years, witnesses this gender imbalance in the office every day. Whats more, shes also experienced the prejudices that come with it. I cannot count the number of times I have been mistaken for the personal assistant of a manager, just because my desk was located next to my male manager, she says. While out on site, Jardine has also found that site managers will often ask her male colleague rather than her for technical advice, despite the fact that Jardine is the technician on the project.Hopefully this trend will change, however, with organisations like Mastermind Smart Girls and Dells Women in IT Executive Mentoring Program (WITEM) initiatives aimed at supporting women in ICT, particularly those entering leadership roles.Despite some of the challenges, Jardine has enjoyed a rewarding and stimulating career in IT and is mucksmuschenstill enthusiastic about her industry. IT has a lot to offer if you want to be constantly challenged, always learning, enjoy exposure to new technologies and like to think outside the square. And you get to play with computersSee our sortiment of online courses in IT.FinanceWhile some sectors in finance are evenly represented by both men and women, others, such as investment banking and the trading floor, are a completely different story. Perceived by many as a testosterone-fuelled modern-day battlefield, the trading floor is a financial arena that women tend to shy away from. Trader and Associate Director of the Derivatives team at UBS, Stephanie Pow, observed this trend early on in her career. When I first started on the trading floor ... it was a real eye opener for me that there were so few women, she says. From my experience with Capital W and what Ive observed in the market, even at the grad recruitment stage, its not 50/50 in terms of women and men applying, says Pow. This, along with the fact that many female colleagues perceive the trading floor as an aggressive and scary work environment, inspired Pow to establish Capital W an initiative set up for female UNSW students that gave them the opportunity to network with financial corporations. The idea is to give women a better understanding of what the industry is like so they can make better career decisions, says Pow, who believes misconceptions about the trading floor often lead women to limit their career options. My personal opinion is that its almost like self-selection I dont want to apply because Im not the aggressive type. Ive seen the movies. I dont want to work in an environment like that. While theres no doubt the trading floor is a hectic and dynamic place to work, Pow points out that its nothing like the movies. So if youre smart and driven, it could be the perfect place for you.Want to get in on the action? Consider one of our online finance courses and go for brokeScienceWhen we think of scientists, names such as Albert Einstein, Isaac Newton and Doc Brown come to mind (yes, the guy who created the flux capacitor and travelled through time with Michael J Fox). But what about names like Marie Curie, the first woman to win a Nobel Prize in Science, or Jane Goodall, the worlds foremost expert on chimpanzees? Unfortunately women are heavily underrepresented in the field of science, a fact that is highlighted in the 2012 Health of Australian Science report. The report, prepared by Australias Chief Scientist, notes that although there is an equal number of men and women completing degrees in science, women account for smaller percentage shares in scientific careers and at senior academic levels. This means there is a potentially large and talented pool of scientists that is untapped. So if youre passionate about science, have a serious think about pursuing a career in this industry. With grants such as the LOreal Australia and New Zealand For Women in Science Fellowship, an extra X chromosome can be a serious advantage.Check out our range of online science courses.Building and constructionIts an industry thats traditionally male-dominated and makes you think of VB ads and Hard Yakka workwear, and the stats concur. According to ABS statistics, construction is the industry with the least amount of female representation in Australia, with women making up a mere 12 per cent of the industry. Thankfully the building and construction sector is working towards changing its boys only image. The ACT Training Fund Authority has devised a Tradeswomen program to encourage the fairer sex to take up a career in any number of building and construction trades. These ran ge from carpentry and plumbing to bricklaying and cabinet making. So if youre a woman who likes working with her hands and has an eye for detail, this is one industry you should definitely consider.Get qualified with a certificate or diploma in building and construction.EngineeringEngineering is another highly paid but heavily male-dominated field of work. According to peak body Engineering Australia, in 2011 women represented only 11 per cent of their overall membership a gender imbalance that is mirrored across the globe. Simply put, there are just not enough female engineers around its a trend that means a lot of undiscovered potential and talent. Its a career that requires superior analytical and mathematical skills, so if this sounds like you then dont let your potential go to wasteGet your engineering qualification now.Management/ExecutiveAustralia has come a long way in terms of having women in positions of power. As it stands, our country is currently being led by our fi rst-ever female Prime Minister, our first female Governor-General and, of course, lets not forget our female Monarch, Queen Elizabeth II herself at the helm. Despite having achieved this girl power trifecta in politics, the reality is that when it comes to the corporate world, women are still woefully underrepresented in senior and executive levels of management. But this doesnt have to be the case. Chief Executive Women is one organisation that offers programs and scholarships to help develop and enable Australian female leaders. How to Avoid Workplace Drama

How to Avoid Workplace DramaHow to Avoid Workplace DramaSometimes I get a charlie horse at night. I wake to that telltale ache, and then I have to keep my leg bent and my muscle relaxed. If, in my grogginess, I mistakenly stretch into the cramp, boom. It gets me. Im left with a wicked kink, and my muscle is sore for days. Workplace drama, which involves purposefully exaggerating a situation to attract extra emotional attention, is similar at the onset. When someone tries to entice us with drama, there is a moment where we get to decide, Am I going to minimize this or stretch into the cramp?Professional relationships dont require of us what personal relationships do. If you have a drama seeker in your workgroup, you dont have to take that on. You just have to figure out how to navigate around that persons dysfunction. If you manage the kollektiv, then its in your units best interest for you to hold the instigator accountable for his or her activity. The fact that an individual is inci ting unnecessary problems shouldnt be countered with an emotional response. That will leave you with a charlie horse. Instead, cite that individual for trying to inciting chaos on your team and show him or her that you wont tolerate it.Whatever your role, refrain from engaging the drama. This is a choice you get to make. Heres how. Control How Much of Your Ego is Tied up in Your Work It feels great to do a good job at work and to be a part of a successful team. Theres nothing like the buzz of operating at full capacity. But there are all kinds of people at work. Some are not happy, and they may take that out on those around them. Sometimes they are in leadership positions, and their drama is especially hard to dodge. While working in the right environment can be fulfilling, it is only one stream of affirmation that validates your sense of self. Develop other parts of yourself, too, so that your identity and your success doesnt just come from one source. Cultivate other affirmation s treams. Join a club, coach a team, take a class. You are full of talents and abilities. The mora you explore them, the more affirmation you get back. This fortifies your psychological immune system, and it makes it harder for those who may try to rattle your cage. Developing your other interests helps you to know yourself better. It creates genuine self-esteem. Drama houndsthe bullies, busibodies, etc.like to engage easy prey. You cant change this about them. When you fortify yourself from within, you make yourself less vulnerable to others chaos. Know Your Truth Drama seekers excel at creating confusion among their contemporaries. When gossiping, bullying or other bad workplace behavior takes root, less work gets done and the drama seeker who started it can assume a faux leadership role. Its a breakdown of professionalism that causes discomfort and dissatisfaction. If you manage the unit, nip this in the bud. But if you dont, and this is happening on your team, then your best appro ach is to hold tightly to your own truth. Its hard to have a clear vision of reality in a culture that doesnt seem sane, so dont look to that culture for clarity. Trust yourself. Also know what you are willing to stand for and what you wont. If you feel that the drama has crossed a line and your manager isnt showing leadership despite your urgings, then it may be time to look for a new job.You deserve a workplace culture where colleagues dont have the opportunity to needlessly ramp up the level of emotion. Your manager should have the leadership skills to nix that behavior. Remember Work isnt supposed to siphon off emotional energy that you need for your personal life. The point of professionalism is that its a code of behavior that keeps unnecessary emotion out of your worklife. If someone is blurring those lines, then he or she is invading your personal space. You dont have to put up with that.

How Tough Times Open Doors

How Tough Times Open Doors How Tough Times Open Doors At current rates of unemployment, being without a job bears less stigma. It’s called “candidate forgiveness,” and companies are in the mood to practice it.Where do you find the silver lining in the darkest economic cloud since the Great Depression? It’s hard to think of positives. Supposedly, the roads are less crowded as fewer commuters make their way to and from work. (Although that certainly doesn’t seem to be the case here in Los Angeles!) Those of us who are employed might have a better selection of office furniture and supplies to choose from now that the competition is diminished. But all in all, there is very little to celebrate when more than 15 million Americans are unemployed. There is one upside for current job seekers: Being unemployed has become so common that recruiters and hiring managers are less likely to consider it a negative. We call it “candidate forgiveness”; while it’s traditionally easier to find a job when you have one already recruiters today are more willing to overlook the fact that a candidate is unemployed when he applies for a position. As a recruiter, I can attest to the difficulty I have had selling an unemployed candidate to a top-notch company when employment numbers are more robust. In a strong economy, recruiters prefer “passive” candidates - those who were employed and not looking. I’ve drawn a lot of analogies to dating in my articles about the job search ; this scenario would resemble the guy who already has a girlfriend and seems like the perfect boyfriend. If you missed last year’s dance, you need not apply for prom king. But circumstances have changed, and so have the sentiments of recruiters. With so much great talent on the streets, finding the right candidate is more about finding the right skill set and less about whether the candidate employed or unemployed. In fact, it’s harder than ever to poach an employed candidate away from seemingly stable employment.  But this period of candidate for giveness won’t last forever, and some of the circumstances of unemployment are more forgivable than others. Take advantage of candidate forgiveness while you can by framing your employment in the best possible way for the recruiter. Some key points: It is important to clarify that it was a company-wide layoff. It’s even better to know the numbers - “50 percent of the staff” or “over 1,500 people.” Have strong references lined up (preferably supervisors) who can back up your story. Obtain their personal e-mail addresses before you part ways so you can stay in touch down the road. Contact your references so that they know who might be calling and the position you are considering. Get their permission to use them as references. (If you are hired, be sure to follow up with a thank-you note.) Be prepared to compromise. Decide what benefits or working conditions are important to you and which are superfluous. Set standards where you think they’re important, but be realistic, too. It’s not 2007 anymore. While it is most important to get back to work, if you have a choice, pick the job that will continue to enhance your skills. This will be of value in your next job search or if you are ever laid off again. Yes, this recession has leveled the playing field for unemployed candidates, but you should use this to your advantage while you can â€" before the economy recovers. Let’s hope that’s soon.
